Rutgers VETS Graduation – December 2015

Veterans Environmental Technology and Solutions

The Rutgers Veterans Environmental Technology and Solutions (VETS) program is a groundbreaking initiative to empower local, unemployed veterans with new green job skills.

Local veterans receive an educational stipend while undergoing certified training programs in a range of sustainable landscaping, environmental, and business skills. New trainees learn through a combination of in-class lectures, site visits, and hands-on engagement within the community. The program also provides resources to help participants readjust to civilian life, become self-sufficient, and re-engage in their community through environmental improvement initiatives.

VETS launched the nation’s first-ever fish exchange program in 2015.The fish exchange is an initiative to reduce immediate health risks to people who eat fish caught from the Lower Passaic River.  Veteran trainees are taught a range of aquaponics topics and engage/educate residents and fishermen from Lower Passaic River communities through the operation of a River fish exchange. In its first year, the veteran trainees educated more than 240 community members and have prevented more than 157 pounds of contaminated fish from being eaten by fishermen and their families.

VETS was formed in 2014, as a collaborative effort between Rutgers Cooperative Extension, the Metropolitan Resurrection Community Development Corporation (MRCDC) and the Lower Passaic River Study Area Cooperating Parties Group (CPG) – comprised of approximately 60 companies working together to improve the condition of the Lower Passaic River.
